JPEGmini Lite App Reviews

Free version works great unless you need to compress over 20 files a day

I only occasionally need to compress the JPEG files I scan, when I need to submit them using an online updating page, which usually have size limits, and this program has been doing what it promises just fine so far. It made all my jpegs into half their original size, without a noticeable change in the visual quality. The only difference of the free version is the limit on the number of jpegs you can convert a day, which does not really bother me since I compress at most 3-4 ones a day.

Works as described!

A great, little application that works exactly as described. I use it for photos that I never intend to print or make adjustments to. Works great for wallpapers and other random photos where you would look at them on the computer / iPad / iPhone etc. I think it would be great if it were say $4.99 instead since it is, afterall a one trick pony….proprietary pony.

Crashes When Changing Preferences - every time

Using OS 10.7.5 this program immediately crashes every time I try to change the Preferences so as to write files to a user folder without overwriting the original file. Attempts to report the bug on their support site insists that I register with them on their "Get Satisfaction" site. Bah-humbug. They should not make it so difficult to report a problem or insist that I register with them to report an issue. Would not even consider the paid-for version until they address this issue. Heck, not overwriting the original file should be the default behavior, even if they are confident that the final image is as good as the original (which I am not so confident). Allan

Simply Awesome

It really done what it said. I tried few jpeg around size 6MB each and they reduced to around 950kb-930kb without any change in quality and resolution.

really helps

I really think this is very helpful whenever I want to upload pictures.

Diet Jpeger!

Love this product! Good vaue at $19.00 as I am now able to manage all the iPhotos images I have just dragged them out instead of exporting, over the years. I have already reduced my Photo file by over 2GBs and am still working through them. Easy to use with drag and drop and you see the pictures as they are compressed. The best feature is you can drop entire folders into the compressor and watch the space saving dashboard as it registers how much space you save on a cumulative basis.

Happy Hard Disks

Just saved 36 gigs of space.. enough said. Cant see a difference at 100%, 150% and just barely at 200%. So far so good.

Very good results

Like others I am having great results with JPEGmini in saving space while preserving image quality. I tested the lite version on a batch of 20 images taken from a recent trip with my iPhone 4S. The images which were taken and stored on the iPhone were around a couple megabytes a piece. JPEGmini reduced them to somewhere near 900k on average. However, images taken with an older Canon point and shoot were only reduced by 75k or so. Images exported from various photo editing and paint programs on my Mac have results similar to the iPhone shots. This tells me that there may be a lot of wildly varying degrees of image optimization out there on different devices and software and Apple could really improve the storage of pics on iOS if it wanted. (I eventually did my entire collection of pics from my trip and 5.7Gb turned into 2.3Gb.) The second part of my test was to take the original unoptimized versions of pics and overlay the JPEGmini version to look for differences. As I turned the layers on and off I couldnt detect anything that I couldnt chalk up to imagination. Next I inverted the color of JPEGmini version and reduced the opacity to 50% (while on a normal blend mode) which when over the original basically washes out to flat gray but anything different between the two will show up. I still couldnt make out any difference in the all gray image so I went ahead and merged the layers and began repeatedly pumping the contrast and reducing the brightness. After three rounds of this I had a dark almost black image which just showed some of the differences in compression artifacts and the general outlines of the objects in the scene. With that I was satasfied that whatever it is doing I am okay with it for the space savings, and I purchased the full version. Ive now cleared up over 15Gb of space and I am still working on it.

Totally Worth It

This app works as advertised. I reduced my Dropbox picture folder to 3.45gb (originally 6.47gb). Before I bought the full version, I used the light version jus to make sure that I wouid not loose quality. I put the original and the reduced file side by side and viewed them at "Actual Size" as well as at 200% and I could not tell the difference. Since space is an issue these days, the $19.99 I spent for this app was well worth it. Works great, fast and best of all, no corruption. Great product.

Good for emails, not for the family memories

App is excellently scripted to allow the user to compress the photo and allow the user to view how much space they saved. However the quality of the photo seems to change when you look at the picture in-depth. Additionally the app SHOULD have a revert option because you will lose the original JPG photo that you imported into the app. The makers of this program forgot to say that you need to make a copy of your photo because changes are final

Great Compression

The compression is excellent. Although the original app would only replace the source image, the current version allows a separate copy. My examination at the pixel level showed the compression to not introduce any new artifacts or distortion. However, it is clear that at the pixel level, things have changed. Generally the change is such that the jpg-file should not be used for any further editing, because changes of changes can get introduced in a way that can make the artifacts easily detectable. One should always keep the original file around if further editing is a possibility. The only reason I did not give the app 5 stars is that I create giant jpg-files that exceed the 28-megabyte limit, and I would prefer that the app be able to deal with at least 128-megabyte files.

Good app, overpriced

The app is good and does what it says - reduces the size of jpegs. The quality suffers only a little bit and you will notice this only if you look images at 100%. Two things bother me: 1) it constantly asks me to upgrade and after I paid the ridiculous 20$, it kept asking me. After several restarts of the app, it then started asking me to leave a review. Hate this obtrusive messages. 2) Overpriced as mentioned above. The perfect price for this app would be 5-8$. It isnt worth the price in my opinion. However, I paid this price because the app is convenient - you just drag and drop files and it overwrites them very quickly. This is great if you tend to send a lot of pics to someone and you shoot with DSLR (or some point and shoot high megapixel camera), where regular jpegs are around 5-7 MB. Could be good if there was an option to set what you prefer - quality/size, and a recommended setting which is the default currently.

Just Buy it

I desperately needed to reduce web images web to a smaller size then the techniques I was using at the time. I was able to take a combined size of 69 large sized images from 48MG down to 13.6MG with now viable quality loss. Just buy this app . . . period.

Good!

It’s fast, and efficient. The compression ratio is around 2.0 to 3.1 for my photos. It is worth the money.

Doesn’t optimize JPEG images for the web

I tried to optimize images between 100kb and 1mb in size but JPEGmini says, “Skipped all Photos: None of the photos could be optimized by JPEGmini”.

Worth buying but…

This is a great little application and works as advertised. However, I warn you NOT to upgrade within the app since it ‘upgrades’ to an intermediate version which remains called ‘JPEGmin Lite’ and not the ‘real’ ‘JPEGmini’. Instead just buy the real app directly! I’d rate JPEGmin 5* but this semi-upgrade is irritating so I rate JPEGmin Lite +upgrade 3*.

Does what it does really well

I needed something to shrink the size of photos and this hits the nail on the head. It’s a bit more expensive than I’d prefer and the screen has some frivalous features like total bytes saved but the overall functionality is spot-on and the quality appears to be excellent. My only concern is that you have to chose to either overwrite files in place at the same resolution or write another file somewhere else at a revised resolution - not a big deal but seems like an odd way to design the software since I want to both shrink the size and the resolution on most of my photo files. Overall, however, great software and worth the $20 I paid for it.

Simply fantastic. Period.

I have been dealing with digital photos for nearly 20 years, and it has always been a struggle to play around with the “Save” settings to find the optimal balance between quality and file size, optimizing them for the web. This little app does it automatically and extremely well. If you’re trying to reduce the size of JPEGs as much as possible without compromizing noticeable quality, this is the app for you.

GREAT PROGRAM

GREAT PROGRAM, MANY MANY THANKS. ITS SIMPLE, GREAT TOOL.

One trick pony

This app pretty much does what Photoshop does at a 65% JPEG quality setting. Nothing more, nothing less. Points for being easy to use and batch processing.
